Honor is looking to improve their standing with the developer community, and so with the launch of the Honor View 10 also came with the Honor Open Source Program which aims to provide much-needed kernel sources in a timely fashion and APIs that allow developers to take advantage of AI capabilities in the HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC. Honor invited their first key developers into the program, and we’ve already started to see the fruits of their work. Now, official TWRP for Honor View 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro is now available thanks to the efforts of XDA Senior Recognized Developer Dees_Troy.
The developer announced official support for version 3.2.1-0 of TWRP, but right now decrypting data is not currently supported. We’re also told that MTP does not work at this time, but you can still use ADB to push and pull files. Dees_Troy says the amount of time it will take to get data decryption working with TWRP is unknown—if they’re able to get it working at all.
Still, on-device backups through apps such as the popular Titanium Backup should satisfy most users. And most importantly, TWRP will allow you to make backups of critical partitions like ramdisk_recovery, ramdisk, vendor, and system so you won’t have to go scouring the web for a full OTA zip to extract and flash onto your device. (Editor’s note: that is very much a painful experience, so TWRP is definitely welcome.)
There are reports that the touchscreen is broken if you install the Mate 10 Pro build onto the Mate 10, but we’re sure bugs such as these will be fixed soon. Dees_Troy only had access to the View 10 and Mate 10 Pro ramdisk_recovery images when he first started work on this, so it’s unsurprising to see that the initial release focuses on those two devices.
In other news, the kernel source code also helped pave the way for modifications such as Magisk to be released. Project Treble compatibility is also what allowed for the first AOSP Android 8.0 Oreo ROM for the device to be released. With TWRP now being made available and as more developers start to receive their View 10 devices from Honor, we hope to see more custom development on these devices in the near future.
